Work light to dark: Watercolors are flexible and changeable. Start with a heavily diluted brush load of your lightest color. Then use progressively darker colors, all diluted, filling areas, until you have covered your page. Then go back to the lighter colors and add details with layers of more intense color. Keep building up the colors, working round the page, until you are done.

Wet on wet: This makes for gauzy, more abstract colors and shapes—what we think of as “watercolory”. It’s nice when combined with a line drawing, too. Wet your page a bit. You can paint the whole page with a big soft wet brush, daub it with a wet paper towel or sponge, or just carefully pour some water directly on it. (This works best if you have heavier paper or, ideally, watercolor paper in your book.) Then drop some watercolor on it and watch it ooze out into spidery waves. Push it around. Add more colors if you want, or wait 5 minutes for it to dry, then add some more hues.
